The making of an Unliveable Capital: A comprehensive study on Delhi’s Urban Issues

Samirsinh P Parmar, Swati H. Chauhan

Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the multifaceted challenges confronting Delhi in its role as India's capital. Utilizing data sourced from various government agencies, this survey-based overview meticulously examines the demerits and systemic issues compromising the city's sustainability and operational efficiency. Key areas of concern include severe air pollution, extensive groundwater depletion, inadequate infrastructure, chronic traffic congestion, and pronounced socio-economic disparities. Furthermore, the analysis delves into the adverse effects of rapid urbanization, climate change, and administrative inefficiencies on Delhi's liveability and governance. The findings underscore the critical need for immediate, comprehensive reforms to address these issues. Absent such transformative interventions, the study argues for a serious consideration of relocating the national capital to a more sustainable and strategically advantageous location. This research aims to provide policymakers and stakeholders with evidence-based insights to catalyse urgent and necessary changes, ensuring a viable future for both Delhi and its inhabitants.
