Advancing Smart Sustainability Goals for Net-Zero Societies: The Role of Circular Economy Models
Abstract
The transition to net-zero societies is a critical component of global climate action, requiring innovative approaches to achieve sustainability. Circular economy (CE) models have emerged as transformative frameworks that shift the focus from a linear "take-make-dispose" economy to a circular system emphasizing resource efficiency, waste minimization, and environmental regeneration. This study explores the role of CE models in advancing smart sustainability goals, particularly within the context of achieving net-zero emissions. Key principles of the CE, such as designing out waste, prolonging the lifecycle of materials, and regenerating natural systems, are examined alongside their practical applications in diverse sectors including manufacturing, construction, and waste management. Through a review of successful CE practices in cities and industries, this study highlight the potential of CE models to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve resources, and foster resilient economic systems. However, it also identifies critical barriers to implementation, including economic constraints, regulatory gaps, technological limitations, and behavioral resistance. To address these challenges, the study proposes policy recommendations, such as incentivizing circular practices, strengthening regulations, promoting research and innovation, and raising public awareness. The findings underline the indispensable role of CE models in achieving net-zero targets and sustainable development goals. Societies can progress toward a more sustainable and resilient future by integrating circularity into economic and environmental planning. This studytherefore provides a comprehensive framework for researchers, policymakers, and industries to leverage CE in the global pursuit of net-zero emissions and sustainability.
